The American Family
In the past American families were quite large. A family usually had five or more children. But now the family has become smaller. There are many reasons for this. One of them is that the cost of living has increased. Children attend schools for more years than they used to. So they are dependent on their families longer. Besides, children are nowadays better dressed and they spend more money on entertainment.
At the same time, families are less close than they used to be. More and more American mothers work away from home.
The divorce rate is very high. A lot of children in the U.S. live part of their young lives with only one parent. Broken families make both children and their parents unhappy.
However, things are getting better. More and more people are becoming serious with divorce. The rate of childbirth is rising. Americans have come to realize how important it is to have a happy family.(PETS-P61-62) |
