Since those young guys had passing grades in their CET-3, they urged me to live up to my words that I would introduce a best film that I'd ever seen as a reward. Taking seriously, I settled down to reflect all the movies that once touched me. It was effortless to name a few such as "Somewhere in time", "Forest Gump", "Roman holiday" etc. But if called one a best, I should be more picky.
Actually being a working mother, I found myself revolving around a world of a baby, with baby's magazines piling up on my shelf, baby's VCDs dominating the TV screen and baby's lullaby overwhelming the whole room. I had hardly any time to review those classic collections.Yet a group of young guys were waiting anxiously for my recommendation. I won't let them down. I would treat them my favorite---Casablanca.
It was a tale of two respectable men vying for the same woman's love. Yet it was set in such a chaotic world that people could barely decide their fate on their own. To me, it was such a romantic yet heart-breaking story that it left endless aftertaste. Everytime I reviewed the plot that Rick risked his own life to arrange for his competitor-a renowned movement leader's departure and sent his beloved Ilsa off with her husband to safety, I had intense mental struggle as the characters in the film. Great explanation of love---that was why it was called a classic and endured all these years. And you couldn't miss mentioning the theme song when talking about Casablanca. What a haunting melody with these unforgettable lines---
" a kiss is not a kiss without your sigh..."
It was a must see at least once in lifetime. But when I presented it to those young guys, I was disappointed to find that it was not the right taste. Apparently the mid-80's didn't appreciate that kind of love---desperate and self-sacrificial. Moreover the complicated background of the movie puzzled them a lot. It didn't come up to their expectation. Later they told me they preferred "Harry Potter" or " The Lion King" more.
That was the last straw. I felt terrible generation gap.
